Clinical Genetics

The overall objective of the program is to educate and train master level candidates to the main principles on multiple congenital anomalies and syndromes, their identification, diagnosis and counselling in medical genetics, genotype/phenotype correlations, introduction to techniques of communication in genetic counselling, and functional genomics.


The training program lasts 1 year and it engages the student for a total of 8 weeks. Formal lessons will be held in Siena for a period of 4 weeks, which will be scattered throughout the year in order to facilitate Master candidates.

Lessons are organized in different main areas: Propedeutics, Non Syndromic and Syndromic Intellectual Disabilities, Microdeletion/microduplication syndromes, Cancer Genetics, Organ-specific genetic conditions, Management of genetic syndromes, Prenatal genetic counselling.

Four weeks of the course will be spent in clinics. Students will have the opportunity to move in different training places depending on their particular interest. The internship will consist in the participation and in the conduct of active sessions of genetic counseling.


Thanks to this program students will become aware of clinical genetics services present in Italy, useful for future training programs and positions.


This New Edition of the Master represents a modified version respect to those already carried out that meets the needs of internalization and increased flexibility. Considering the International demands, the Master was amended to include the use of the English language, the ability to follow the formal lectures by teleconference, and the possibility to carry out the internship in one or more different centers.
